Wednesday 17th October, 2018

NAVIGATING THE COMPLEXITIES OF COMPLEX TRAUMA

Guest Speaker: Naomi Halpern

Venue: Conference Room, Level 1 Bolte Wing (Building F), 14 Nicholson St, St Vincent's Hospital, Fitzroy VIC 3065

Time: 3pm - 4pm

The session:

Trauma-informed practice reframes the medical diagnostic model, “what is wrong with this person?”, with curiosity about, “what has happened to this person?”. It understands trauma responses as functional; a person’s best attempts to manage overwhelming internal distress and external stressors. Underpinning trauma-informed practice are five core principles - safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration and empowerment. Inherent within these principles is respect for diversity. This seminar will cover definitions, prevalence and presentations of trauma and outline the foundations for a trauma informed service and clinical practice.

About the speaker:

Naomi Halpern is director of Delphi Training and Consulting. She has 30 years’ experience working with complex trauma, PTSD and dissociative disorders. Naomi provides consultation, supervision and training to mental health organizations, sexual assault centres, law firms and the United Nations. Naomi worked at VTMH for a brief period, during  2018.
