WORKING TOGETHER TO FIGHT THE RISE OF RACE POLITICS
Guest speaker: Commissioner Kristen Hilton,
Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (VEOHRC)

This year has seen a major public conversation about a reported 'African gang crisis' in Melbourne. It began with politicians in Canberra, and became so damaging that Victoria Police took the extraordinary step of asking media outlets to report more responsibly.

During this period, the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission noted a 70% spike in complaints about racism in our streets, playgrounds and workplaces. We heard about young African-Australians afraid to gather in public or take public transport, and about African kids being bullied at school. An SBS survey found that 20.5% of Australians believed African refugees 'increased crime'.

So how has all this affected the mental health and well being of African-Australians? How can we support them?  And how can we work together to fight the rise of race politics in our state?

Join Commissioner Hilton for a discussion on #AfricanGangs and racism in Victoria.

Kristen Hilton was appointed as Victoria’s Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner in 2016. As Commissioner, Kristen’s role is to promote and protect human rights and equality across the state and lead the Commission’s work in creating a rights respecting culture within organisations, governments and communities. She is the Chair of the expert panel in both the Fire Services review and Victoria Police review and chairs the recently established Male Champions of Change group for Fire and Emergency Services.
