VTMH is joining forces with the Victorian Learning Clusters to deliver introductory cultural responsiveness workshops for the mental health service workforce. This workshop is offered via the Southern Cluster.

About the workshop:

This full day workshop introduces participants to principles that inform culturally safe practice, while encouraging the exploration of practical skills to enhance diversity responsive mental health practice. Using a range of presentation and facilitation styles, the format encourages participants to reflect on their own cultural values, beliefs and models in delivering recovery focused interventions.

Divided into two parts “equality, equity and diversity” and “culturally responsive practices”, participants are invited to explore the relationship between policy, human rights legislation, and the manner in which we provide respectful person-centered care. Key practice issues include: cultural safety, cultural humility, working effectively with interpreters, assessment and recovery, community engagement and service development. Participants are encouraged to reflect and build on existing knowledge and skills to develop curiosity and inquisitiveness in the mental health encounter.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the workshop participants will have:
  • A working knowledge of key government policies and human rights legislation in relation to culturally diverse practice,
  • An understanding of the importance of reflective practice in creating culturally safe spaces,
  • A working knowledge of key issues in cultural diversity and the role of culture in mental health service delivery,
  • An understanding of the social determinants of health, ethnicity, diversity and intersectional approaches,
